Urbino is the city of Raffaello, a fantastic residence of Montefeltro, the old town that UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site. During the Renaissance, Urbino was the major capital of Europe. Today it continues to be a vital centre, home to one of the oldest and most prestigious Italian universities, a meeting place for people coming from all over the world. Urbino remains the city of many cultural events linked to art, books, music, historical commemorations and sports. The symbol of Urbino is the magnificent Palazzo Ducale, one of the most interesting architectural examples of the Italian Renaissance. Its realization was commissioned by the Duke Federico da Montefeltro. He wanted Urbino to be a perfect city and Palazzo Ducale its symbol. Today the Palace houses the National Gallery of Marche, one of the most important collections of Renaissance paintings with works by Raffaello, Piero della Francesca, Tiziano, Paolo Uccello, together with many other masterpieces. In this period, from 8th April to 10th May, it houses some important works by Leonardo da Vinci to honour him on his 500th death anniversary.
